Save Money with a Portable Home Generator
Portable home generators are one way to save money on your monthly utility bills. With the state of economies all over the world, saving as much money as possible is one of the top priorities of many households.
Many folks think of energy generators as just another household appliance, like a refrigerator or stove, although often smaller and more compact. One should always remember that generators are of another breed.
Safety needs to be your first priority when purchasing a portable home generator. Generators are a great way to save money, with the use of them by residential homes on a rapid incline. If not installed and used properly though, they could cause many problems.
When generators are running, they emit the deadly gas carbon monoxide. Never use generators in enclosed areas. If fatal fumes build up, neither open windows or fans can provide enough fresh air. Always have a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector in the vicinity of the generator and test it regularly.
Wiring the generators is another issue to take into consideration. Unless you are a licensed electrician, get all permits necessary before even thinking about wiring it. Make sure to follow the owner’s manual for specific guidelines, also.
As with any electrical installation, never use the newly installed generator until it has been safely grounded as it can cause an electric shock. Grounding is usually very simple, refer to the owner’s manual. There are minimum sizes and materials covered in the manual that will give one the proper grounding.
If you choose to buy a gasoline powered generator, remember that its vapors are extremely flammable. Always allow the engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling it. Fuel spilled on hot engine parts could cause them to ignite. If the generator is not going to be used for thirty days, don’t forget to stabilize the gas with a fuel stabilizer.
Always keep your generator dry and never operate it under wet conditions, as they produce powerful voltage. Take precautions to protect the generator from rain or snow. Try operating it on a flat, dry surface under a canopy-like structure. Always make sure hands are dry before touching a generator.
Don't ask too much from your generator. Operating more appliances or equipment than the output rating of the generator can cause a fire. Always prioritize the household needs, and remember to turn off all powered equipment before shutting down the generator.
Never under any circumstance plug a generator into a wall outlet. It can cause what is known as backfiring, which can pose an electrocution risk to utility workers or anyone else using the same utility transformer.
Home generator usage is on the rise. By installing and operating a portable generator properly and safely, households can reap the benefits year after year.
